Job Title: Lead Piping Designer
Overview
A Lead Piping Designer will lead the design and modeling efforts for complex refinery projects for a diverse portfolio of refinery projects for a variety of clients.
You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of design—from conceptual plot plans to final construction isometrics—ensuring all deliverables meet industry codes and project-specific standards. You will ensure full compliance with industry codes, client standards, and internal procedures. You will be responsible for developing standardized work processes and providing technical training to the team, including junior level designers.
Candidates must demonstrate expert-level piping layout proficiency and a strong command of 3D CAD environments, specifically AutoCAD Plant 3D and Navisworks. Success in this role requires the ability to interface effectively with clients, engineers, and multi-disciplinary teams across both large-scale and small-cap projects
Core Responsibilities
· Design & Modeling Leadership: Lead the development of 3D models in AutoCAD Plant 3D for greenfield, brownfield, and revamp projects.
· Oversee P&ID data consistency, manage ASME B31.3 specs and catalogs, and establish project-specific CAD procedures and drawing.
· Manage the deliverables within scope, budget, and schedule. Incorporate project criteria into layouts to meet financial and schedule goals and participate in client meetings as needed.
· Quality Assurance & Coordination: Lead the QA/QC process by reviewing P&IDs, plot plans, and calculations. Conduct interdisciplinary clash detection and lead professional client model reviews using Navisworks.
· Mentorship & Team Development: Assign work to design staff and actively train, mentor, and develop junior team members in piping discipline fundamentals and Plant 3D workflows.
· Field Support: Perform site walk-downs to verify as-built conditions and translate
Required Qualifications
· Experience: 15+ years in piping design for the refinery/petrochemical sector, with at least 5 years in a "Lead" capacity.
· Travel: Ability to travel based on project needs.
· Codes & Standards: Comprehensive knowledge of ASME B31.3 process piping and refinery layout best practices (e.g., equipment spacing, stress requirements, and maintenance access).
· Communication: Proven ability to interface with Project Managers, Engineers, and Clients to resolve technical issues and maintain project schedules.
